“Wild Things,” by Campbell Hutchinson, 2008, a children’s book of 18 paintings and limericks, written and illustrated by the author.
I originally wrote and illustrated this book to introduce my grandchildren to the animal world, to the world of art, and to the art of reading. Friends and family encouraged me to reach a broader audience.
Children’s stories are too often boring, both for the child or parent who reads them. Part of my motivation was to write limericks that share my fantasy world in an entertaining, and usually humorous, way.
A sample limerick about Charmaine the flamigo:
A bird with a gorgeous pink plume
came strutting out of the gloom
like cotton candy
this crimson dandy
flaunting her rose costume.
When I saw it in full light
my heart thumped with delight
“I’m a flamingo
You miserable gringo”
and off she flew like a kite.
The flamingo’s name was Charmaine
incredibly beautiful, but vain
a swamp ballarina
a feathered regina
but oh, my God, what a pain.
A second book is in the works.
