campbell hutchinson - artist info
Campbell Hutchinson is native of Louisiana who has lived and worked in New Orleans since 1960. He is a retired lawyer who pursues his passion—painting–full-time.
Hutchinson’s work is figurative, ranging from man to animal. His in-your-face portraits of cowboys, athletes, construction workers, musicians and the like are his “hardscrabble heroes.” On the other hand, his animal portraits—cows, bulls, buffaloes, roosters, and recently pelicans—are more moody and soulful. His medium is oil on board, canvas and paper. He has exhibited his work in New Orleans and Shreveport of his native state, Fort Worth, Galveston and Houston, Texas, and Brewster, Massachusetts. His recent show (July 2008) at The Studio on Slough Road on Cape Cod invoked the following description of his work:
“[Hutchinson] presents the personality and indelible imprint of the portrait. His works includes Scottish bulls, roosters, and human characters. They lead us to look into the eyes of all living creatures and see our own dreams, fears and struggles to survive. Beautiful and powerful, these images will catch the imagination and leave you with a new view of the world around you.”
Hutchinson and his wife Allison Stewart split their time between New Orleans and the mountains of Colorado. In 1999 they founded KID smART, a non-profit organization that provides artists in the classroom and after-school and community based programs in a variety of art forms to public school children in New Orleans.
He has recently self-published a children’s book, “wild things,” featuring his paintings and limericks he wrote about each painting. Several of these paintings are included in the giclee prints on this website.
